By just 15 years old, he had already earned his green belt, showcasing his talent and determination. In 2002, João and his family made the bold move to the United States, where he continued to hone his skills under the guidance of Grand Master Jorge Popovitch.

Not long after, while still a blue belt, João demonstrated his exceptional knowledge and passion for the sport by taking on the role of instructor at the Academy. His commitment and hard work paid off, and by 2007, he proudly earned his black belt.

After spending a decade training with the Popovitch family, João and his brother Fred took a significant leap in 2012, opening their own gym in Boca Raton. Today, João stands tall as a 4th Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, a testament to his dedication to the art.

Looking back at his earlier years, João’s achievements are equally impressive. In 2010, he earned multiple 1st place titles in both middle-heavy and absolute divisions at the Miami Open and Grapplers Quest, along with a 3rd place finish at the Pan-Ams No-Gi.

João’s competitive rise started back in 2007, when he dominated several tournaments, winning 1st place at the Atlantic Cup, Copa America, and NAGA in the middle-heavy division. Over the years, his podium finishes have established him as a respected and accomplished figure in the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu community, both as a competitor and an instructor.
